Fodder from the Farmer

Even though Labor Day is just past a week ago, it amazes me how quickly we begin to feel the signs of Fall approaching. No longer do we have those long summer evenings of day light to work by. Here at the farm we have begun to sow cover crops such as winter rye on some of the out lying fields. We have also begun to sow winter harvest greens like mustard, collards, spinach, & broccoli raab, and are hopeful forΒ  some timely rains to come and help along their germination. By the end of the month we will begin to plan garlic for next season, while in the mail, seed catalogs have begun to appear for 2011.

Fodder from the Farmer

As August comes to a close; for many of our CSA families, begins the fall schedules which focuses around school and subsequent activities. As a result many times our volunteer base at the farm is reduced, even though this time of the season the volunteers efforts are ever more needed.

The role of the volunteer is crucial to the operation of the CSA especially now that many of the summer help at the farm are also returning to school or college.

As a reminder for those who return to the CSA next season, volunteers who consistently help on the farm; always receive a significant discount with next seasons Share.
