Fodder from the Farmer

This week we begin to see the shares start to bless us with June style abundance. Root crops are beginning with my favorite, red beets, & snap peas have entered the arena.

Another staple of our shares, Swiss Chard also makes its depute. Every week now, I am seeing the love of our labors in the fields become closer to the food on your table. The weather has produced a lush environment for the growth so far, and I am pleased with what I am seeing. Another product of our labors is coming to fruition, the farm now has a Blog site: http://sarverhillfarm.org, here we are posting news letter, scenes of the farm & you can send recipes & posts of your own. We have been a bit slow with our progress (mainly because I’m a farmer not a computer wiz), however Andre; one of the CSA volunteers, has been prodding me along and giving the technical support to get the job don. So check it out & let us know what you think. A reminder to those going on vacation, please get someone to pick up your share or we’ll donate it to the needy.

Fodder from the Farmer

Welcome 20 Week Members!!

Hard to believe that June is here! Seems like just a month ago I was watching the last of the snow melt & already it’s time to think about mulching tomatoes!!! In your shares this week are a couple of seasonal specialties: Asparagus… need I say more? & Garlic Scapes (those curly cue green things most of you are not familiar with. Try using them as you would garlic of just quickly sautéed). As your farmer two things I try to do is,

  1. Bring you the freshest staples of produce your familiar to
  2. Offer unique items to get you to try something new. It makes if fun for all of us while also bringing out your creativity at the dinner table.

In the last week we’ve begun to raise a new brood of meat chickens that will be ready in August, Begun our 4th planting of leaf lettuce & we are beginning to see strawberries slowly ripen along with snap peas & red beets. Looking forward to sharing with you all we’re growing & doing on the Farm!

In this our second week of sharing, I believe in all we are off to a good start! There were a couple of glitches with drop off sites & with next week starting the 20 week shares; I know there will probably be one or two more, however, all issues I believe, will be adjusted smoothly & we”ll be sailing on in no time. Having volunteers starting with this last Wednesday night was a big help and we’ll be encouraging volunteers to continue both Wednesday evenings & Thursday morning so as to prepare your shares for you in a timely manner. We’re beginning to see a few strawberries & my hope is that the late freezers hadn’t reduced the crop significantly, we’re also beginning to see some beets & probably will have some available for the next weeks share. With Memorial Day week end upon us we now begin the big push to finish up the remaining plantings of Tomatoes, Peppers, Basil, & Sweet Corn.

Fodder from the Farmer

I welcome all of you this new season, some of you this very day, others just a couple of weeks from now. When we closed last season it seemed like sooo long till we would start up again, but here we are, fresh and new ready to share again the harvest of the farm. Just a few bits of the business to deal with.

  1. Remember & respect the pick up times for the shares. Pick up should be after 3pm and no later then 7pm unless special arrangements are approved. Shares left overnight will be donated.
  2. Purchases of meat, eggs & bulk purchases will be solely arranged on the farm. Satellite drop sites have not the means for storage.
  3. The CSA is supplying everyone with a reusable bag to take your share home in. Please do not take the basket. It is needed to fill your share for next time!!
  4. If your site has one: please check off your name so we know who has picked up their share that week.
  5. Information concerning the CSA will be regularly posted via this newsletter, so please be in the habit of reading it via e-mail or ask to receive a printed copy.

Please remember, we are always appreciative of volunteers & those who volunteer on a regular basis will be eligible for and additional discount next season. Again, I want to thank you all in supporting this Community Supported Agriculture project and I look forward to being your farmer this season. If you have a good recipe you want to share, let me know and I’ll post it here in the news letter.
